Huskers Successful in First Day of Drake Invitational

Des Moines, Iowa - The Nebraska women's tennis team placed four players in the "A" Flight quarterfinals after all four won their first round matches on Friday afternoon at the Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa. The Huskers also placed a doubles team in the Doubles Draw semifinals in a day filled with Husker victories.

All four Huskers competing in the "A" flight singles bracket won their matches in straight sets, including junior Ashley Finnegan and freshmen Abby Buxton, Amber Chandronnait and Stephanie Evans. Junior Marianne Cicmanec, playing in the "B" Flight singles bracket, was upset in three sets by Maureen Modesto of Missouri.

The doubles team of Finnegan and Chandronnait won two matches Friday, advancing to the semifinals. The doubles team of Evans and Buxton lost in the first round of the Doubles Draw but won their next match in the consolation bracket. With the win, the pair advanced to the semifinals of the Doubles Consolation Draw. Cicmanec, teaming up with Daria Zawasiak of Drake, lost their first round Doubles Draw match.

The Huskers will be in action again tomorrow and will finish the tournament early Sunday morning.
