Junior punter Dan Titchener was among 41 punters nation-wide selected for the Ray Guy Award Watch List by the Greater Augusta Sports Council. The Ray Guy Award is given each year to college football’s top punter and is determined by a national selection committee made up of sports writers, college football coaches, sports information directors, past Ray Guy Award winners and members designated by the Greater Augusta Sports Council.
Joining Titchener on the list are four 2006 top-10 Ray Guy finalists, including one top-three finisher in Georgia Tech’s Durante Brooks. Titchener was nominated for the award based on his outstanding performance on the field last season, as well as his consistent excellence in the classroom and in the community.
Titchener launched 66 punts for a total of 2,592 yards in 2006, an average of nearly 40 yards per punt. In the classroom, he is a six-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and a 2006 first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection, while also giving to the community as a volunteer for Dads of Kids with Disabilities, Village Manor Retirement Center, while earning recognition as a two-time member of the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team.
The Ray Guy Award watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi finalists, to be announced in early November. The national voting body will then vote for the top three finalists who will be announced at the end of November. The award will be presented live on ESPN December 6, 2007, during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
Nebraska has yet to win a Ray Guy Award since its inception in 2000, but did have a finalist in Kyle Larson in 2003.
