Huskers Handed Second Straight Loss

Los Angeles ? Another freshman produced for the Nebraska soccer team on Sunday, but it was not enough as the Huskers came up short against the University of Georgia, 2-1, at the USC Tournament in Los Angeles.

Freshman Brittany Goosen notched her first career goal for the Huskers (2-2-2) in the 65th minute on Nebraska’s one shot on goal in the match. Goosen took a free kick from 30 yards out that bounced in the goal box and past Bulldog goalkeeper Michelle Betos. Goosen became the second freshman to score a goal for NU this season. Fellow Husker Alexa Cardona recorded the first NU goal of the season against Northwestern in the season opener.

The Huskers offense struggled against a stout Bulldog defense, accumulating only nine shots to Georgia’s 11.  Nebraska managed only three corner kicks, while Georgia had eight. Georgia committed 11 fouls to NU’s 10.

Georgia struck first with a goal in the 27th minute from Kelli Corless, who connected on a corner kick from the right side. The Nebraska defense prevailed until the 64th minute, when Bulldog Carrie Patterson dribbled into the box and scored past a sliding Jessica Mills. Mills had four saves on the day.

Nebraska showed they still had fight left, as Goosen’s goal came in the 65th minute, less than a minute after Georgia’s goal. Aysha Jamani recorded two shots in the game, while seven Huskers had one shot apiece.

The Huskers travel home for a four-game home stand, starting with Saint Louis University on Friday at 5 p.m
