Huskers Conclude First Tournament of Season

Des Moines, Iowa - The Nebraska women's tennis team concluded play at the Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa, Sunday. The Huskers were involved in three championship matches, taking home one title. Junior Marianne Cicmanec won the "B" Flight Consolation Singles championship for NU.

Cicmanec won the championship by default after her opponent in the finals, Northern Iowa's Carolina Hannes, was unable to play. Husker freshmen Stephanie Evans, playing in the "A" Flight Singles championship, was forced to withdraw due to injury after she lost the first set to Missouri's Mallory Weber. As a result, Evans and fellow freshman Abby Buxton, scheduled to play in the Doubles Consolation Draw championship, were unable to play their match because of Evans' injury.

For the weekend, Nebraska went 10-5 in singles matches and 4-4 in doubles matches. The Huskers will be in action next at the Riviera All-American Tournament in Los Angeles from Sept. 28-Oct. 3.
