Huskers? Red/White Scrimmage Ends in 1-1 Tie

Lincoln - The Nebraska soccer team opened its 2007 campaign with a 1-1 draw in the annual Red/White Scrimmage at the Nebraska Soccer Field Saturday. More than 300 fans braved hot, windy conditions to see the Huskers take the field in the friendly.

The red squad dominated early action, capping numerous early shots with an Aysha Jamani goal in the 35th minute. A quick throw in from junior Sari Raber at midfield led to a breakaway for the speedy Jamani. Jamani, also a junior, beat sophomore Brittany Pfeil, the white team’s goalkeeper, to give red the advantage.

Red nearly made the deficit two in the second half as junior Selenia Iacchelli put a shot off the crossbar from 35 yards out. However, white used the wind in the second to wear down the red and tie up the game. Freshman Jaclyn White scored on a cross from sophomore Shay Powell that bounced off freshman Rachel Hawryluk.

White notched several more shots in the closing minutes, but red goalkeeper Jessica Mills came up with brilliant saves each time to secure the tie.

Nebraska takes to the field again Wednesday for the annual Meet-N-Beat the Huskers fan day at 6:30 p.m. The free event is a great time for local youth to meet the Husker student-athletes and participate in basic soccer drills, while featuring inflatables and free pizza and Pepsi products.
