Six former and current Husker gymnasts or coaches were selected to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation 15th Anniversary Team recently for their outstanding athletic contributions to the conference. Former Husker Jason Hardabura headlined the list with a first-team selection, while Nebraska alums Jason Christie, Marshall Nelson and Derek Leiter each earned second-team nominations. Current Husker Stephen T?trault garnered honorable mention accolades, while head coach Francis Allen rounded out the group in the coaching category.
The MPSF 15th Anniversary Team recognizes current and former gymnasts from Air Force, California, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Stanford. All honorees were selected by a vote of MPSF men’s gymnastics head coaches. California topped the charts with seven honorees, while Nebraska came in a close second with six.
Allen received a prestigious recognition for his outstanding coaching at Nebraska, while former Husker Mark Williams was named co-coach with Allen. Williams competed for Allen from 1977-1980.
Allen has led the Nebraska gymnastics program to remarkable success over the last 15 years, claiming two MPSF team championships and one NCAA team title. He has also helped 44 athletes earn NCAA All-American awards and 10 athletes claim NCAA individual titles, including three in the all-around.
Tetrault earned a spot on the honorable mention team after only competing at Nebraska for three years. A Lincoln, Neb. native, Tetrault is a three-time All-American for the Huskers.
Hardabura competed for the Huskers from 1998-2001, where he led the Huskers to a third-place NCAA finish in 1999 and claimed the 1999 NCAA all-around and 1999 NCAA floor exercise championships. Christie, a two-time NCAA All-American, competed at Nebraska from 1993 to 1996, during which time he was the 1995 and 1996 MPSF parallel bars champion and the 1994 Big Eight horizontal bar champion.
Six-time NCAA All-American Nelson competed for Nebraska from 1996-2000. During his tenure, Nelson was crowned the 1997 and 1998 NCAA parallel bars champion and the 1998 NCAA horizontal bar champion. He also led Nebraska to MPSF team championships in 1997 and 1999. Leiter wrapped up the Husker selection as a two-time NCAA All-American, who competed for the Huskers from 1997 to 2000. He was also the 2000 MPSF all-around champion.
