Lincoln? Nebraska men’s basketball head coach Doc Sadler spoke to an audience of around 30 Nebraska high school coaches on Saturday morning as part of the NBCA Coaches Clinic at the DevaneyCenter.
Jim Shaw, the team’s video coordinator, opened the day by giving a presentation on video-editing techniques and the importance of game tapes to the high school coaches from around the state.
“The NBCA has a great program developing youth basketball in the state of Nebraska, and we’re glad to help that,” Shaw said. “It was an enjoyable experience to come out and say a few words to high school coaches in the state.”
Next to talk was Sadler, who took questions from the coaches for about an hour. He discussed various topics, including summer workouts, offensive and defensive schemes and motivation techniques.
“I’m a very simple coach,” Sadler said during his presentation. “I want our players to be able to shoot, and I want them to be able to play hard.”
Sadler went over specific plays and strategies that he has used over the course of his coaching career. In addition to being the head coach at Arkansas-Fort Smith, UTEP and Nebraska, Sadler has served as an assistant under coaching legend Eddie Sutton and current Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie.
“There are so many different ways to coach,” said Sadler, although he admitted he likes to keep it as simple as possible. "But sometimes, you can over-execute. You can run a play for 20 seconds, but pass up two open shots and end up turning it over."
Shaw and Sadler stayed after the two were done talking to take more questions from the coaches in an individual setting.
“We all have a common goal,” said Shaw. “And that’s to make the game of basketball in the state of Nebraska the best it can be.”
