Nebraska in 20th After Two Days of NCAA Regional

The Nebraska men's golf team improved its team scored by 14 shots on Friday at the NCAA Central Regional Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. Despite the improvement over Thursday's first round, Nebraska dropped two spots to 20th place in the team standings.

The Huskers posted a 305 team total in Friday's second round, a significant improvement over the 319 Nebraska shot on Thursday. However, scores throughout the field were much lower in the second round and Nebraska's 624 two-round total left them in 20th position. The top 10 teams after Saturday's third and final round will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Williamsburg, Va.

Nebraska will need an outstanding performance on Saturday to get back into contention for a trip to the NCAA Championships. The Huskers 624 total left them in a tie with Kansas at 48-over par, 17 shots behind Texas A&M who sits on the cut line in 10th place with a 607 team total.

Tulsa leads the team race at 585 after an impressive 280 total on Friday. The Golden Hurricane are seven shots in front of Louisville (592), while Lamar (594), Alabama (596) and Tennessee (603) round out the top five. Big 12 schools Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M hold down spots seven through 10 in the team standings.

Nebraska featured a balanced team performance on the par-72, 7,214-yard layout on Friday. Husker seniors Brady Schnell and Ty Capps and sophomore Chris Bruening all carded four-over par rounds of 76. Senior Ryan Lenahan posted a 77, while freshman Jamie Marshall finished with an 80.

Schnell and Bruening each posted 76 for the second consecutive day and their 152 totals left them in a tie for 35th place. Capps rebounded from an opening-round 87 and sits in a tie for 118th place at 163. Marshall and Lenahan each have 162 totals and sit in a tie for 112th position.

Lamar's Dawie Van Der Walt posted a 69 on Friday and his two-round total of 140 gives him a one-shot lead over Louisville's Daryl Fathauer, with a pair of golfers at even par 144, four shots off the lead. In addition to the 10 qualifying teams, the top two individuals not on qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championships.

Nebraska's five golfers will tee off shortly after noon in Saturday's third and final round.
