Nebraska senior men’s tennis player Adrian Szatmary has been named the 2007 central region recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. The regional award qualifies Szatmary for the national award and places him among a group of eight semifinalists.
The Ashe Award, one of the most prestigious in collegiate tennis, goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
The Budapest, Hungary, native led the team both on and off the court as he earned a spot on both the first-team academic All-Big 12 and the All-Big 12 team in 2007. Prior to 2007, Szatmary was also a four-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Compiling an overall season record of 8-9 at the No. 1 spot for the Huskers, Szatmary also tallied a 2-4 mark against conference opponents and was ranked as high as No. 76 in the ITA national polls.
Szatmary faced a gauntlet of ranked opponents from the ITA national poll during the season. Szatmary faced ranked foes in eight of his last nine matches and compiled an overall record of 4-6 against ranked opponents.
Szatmary stunned then-No. 73 Max Jones of New Mexico on Feb. 2, with a 6-3, 6-3 upset in the top spot of the lineup. Competing against No. 60 Vaclav Kucera of Oklahoma twice during the season, Szatmary was victorious in both meetings as he posted two upset wins over the Sooner. The first victory over Kucera also helped the Huskers knock off then-No. 23 Oklahoma for their first Big 12 Conference victory since 2003.
The winner of the national award will be announced Tuesday, May 22, in Athens, Ga.
