Lincoln ? Former Nebraska cross country captain Bryce Dickmeyer achieved a remarkable feat Sunday morning when he won the 30th Annual Lincoln Marathon in a time of 2 hours, 30 minutes and 45 seconds.
A three-year letterwinner and two-time captain for the Huskers from 2003 to 2006, Dickmeyer became the first Lincoln runner to win the race since 1987, despite running in his first career marathon.
“It was very surprising,” Dickmeyer said. “I wasn’t planning on winning at all. I was hoping for top five or top 10 so it was basically a dream.”
Conditions were not favorable for the 26.2 mile race, as rain and heavy winds came across Lincoln early Sunday morning. Dickmeyer took the lead in the first mile and never looked back en route to winning the race by 2 minutes and 31 seconds over runner-up Shannon Stenger of Papillion, Neb.
"No one else seemed to go out very fast," he said. "It might have been young and foolish to do that but it seemed to work out in the end. It helped a lot training through that type of weather all winter. It slowed me down a lot, but it affected everyone."
Dickmeyer is a chemical engineering major at UNL and is a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 honoree, in addition to earning six Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll awards.
