Lincoln ? Taking a break from Big 12 action on Thursday afternoon, the 63rd ranked Nebraska men’s tennis team defeated Nebraska-Kearney, 6-1, at the NebraskaTennisCenter.
The Huskers dominated the doubles competition, sweeping the Lopers at all three spots to win the doubles point for just the fourth time this season.
With the momentum in favor of the Huskers, they rolled into the singles competition and nearly swept UNK, losing only the singles match at the No. 1 spot.
Competing for the Huskers at the No. 1 slot for only the second time this season was freshman David Bendheim. Bendheim matched up against UNK’s ace, William Jacome, who has compiled a 15-1 overall record this season. In the first set, Bendheim stuck with Jacome, forcing the set into a tiebreaker, but was ultimately defeated 7-6(4). Trailing by a set, Bendheim battled back in the second set, but again fell to Jacome, this time 6-3.
The Huskers easily swept the Lopers in the No. 2 through 6 spots with James Clow, Hendrik Stahmer, Mark Tate, Francois Van Impe and Karl Jones all earning victories in straight sets.
After competing five weeks in a row, the Huskers will have a welcome 13-day break before traveling to No. 29 Texas A&M on April 20 and No. 15 Texas on April 22 to conclude regular-season Big 12 Conference play.
Following the conclusion of the Huskers’ regular season, they will have a quick turn around, entering the Big 12 Conference Championships the following weekend in Kansas City, Mo. Both the men’s and women’s Big 12 Championships will be held at the PlazaTennisCenter and are scheduled to run from Thursday, April 26 through Sunday, April 29, with the men beginning competition on Friday, April 27.
