Huskers in 10th Place through First Day of Big 12 Championships

Charlotte, N.C. ? Senior Brady Schnell led the Nebraska men's golf team to a 10th-place standing through the first day of the Big 12 Championships at the par-70, 6,596-yard Prairie Dunes Golf Course in Hutchinson, Kan.

The Huskers finished the first day with a total score of 616 (313-303). Schnell fired a three-over par 143 (72-71), leaving the Omaha native in a tie for 3rd individually. Schnell held the lead in the tournament until the final group came in, and additionally led the tournament in birdies with nine, while also placing second in the tournament in par-four scoring, finishing even.

Schnell's big goals coming into the Big 12 Championships helped to settle the senior after a slow start could have discouraged him.

“I wanted to win," Schnell said. "I have struck the ball real well coming in the last couple of weeks. I didn’t really set a number because you never know what the wind is going to do.”

Freshman Jamie Marshall was next for the Huskers, finishing with a total of 157 (76-81) to stand in a tie for 48th individually. Senior Ryan Lenahan was just behind Marshall, finishing with a 158 (83-75) and placing him 50th individually. Lenahan additionally tied for fourth in the tournament in par-five scoring, finishing at one-under par.

Senior Ty Capps was fourth for the Huskers, finishing with a total of 159 (82-77), placing him in a tie for 51st individually. Capps also tied for first in the tournament with eagles, finishing with one. Senior Drew Reynolds rounded out the squad with a 168 (88-80), leaving him in 59th place individually. Reynolds also tied for sixth in the tournament in birdies, finishing with four.

Oklahoma State is leading the tournament with a total score of 579 (290-289). OklahomaState leads the league with four crowns while Texas has captured three league championships, followed by Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma with one title each. The defending champion is Oklahoma, while the defending medalist is University of Texas golfer Matthew Rosenfeld.

The Huskers will close the Big 12 Championships with the third and final round at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

Brady Schnell, Quotes

Opening Statement

“Those greens, you have to be in the right spot. I was fortunate enough to get the speed down. I really didn’t put a lot of extra stress on myself with five footers coming back. I had a few but maybe not as many as some others might have had.”

On overcoming a slow start

“After my start, I just wanted to save face and get it in the best I could to the greens. I started out double, double, par, double. I’m proud of the way I hung in there. I saved my face. I was thinking, you hit the ball well for the last two weeks. Just settle down. It will come around. You’re just a little bit antsy right now. You’re trying to guide the ball out there. It was a little nerve racking with my driver out there. This course will do that to you. I hit the ball a lot better in the second round with my driver.”
