The Nebraska men’s golf team opened play in the Ron Smith/USF Invitational with a first-round total of 299 on Friday, good for a tie for fifth in the 17-team field. The 54-hole tournament is being contest at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Tampa, Fla.
Nebraska’s 299 total leaves the Huskers tied with Marquette for fifth, 11 strokes behind team leader MiddleTennesseeState who opened with an even-par team total of 288. However, Nebraska is just three strokes behind second-place ColumbusState who posted a 296 and one stroke behind Rhode Island and New Orleans who are tied for third at 298.
Individually, Nebraska was paced by senior Ryan Lenahan who opened with a one-over par 73, to position him in a tie for 12th place. Lenahan is seven strokes behind individual leader Ben Spitz of Rhode Island, who opened with a six-under par 66.
Senior Drew Reynolds and freshman Jamie Marshall sit in a tie for 25th place after each posting a 75 in round one. Seniors Brady Schnell and Ty Capps are another stroke back at 76, and are tied for 36th place.
Action continues in the 54-hole event on Saturday morning, with the final round set for Sunday.
