Huskers Earn Upset Victory Against No. 61 DePaul

Des Moines, Iowa ? After suffering an upset loss on Friday evening against Drake, the No. 72 Nebraska men’s tennis team redeemed itself in a 5-2 upset victory over No. 69 DePaul on Saturday afternoon.

Although the Huskers failed to win the doubles point to start off the contest, they quickly rallied back during the singles competition, defeating the Blue Demons at the No. 1 through 5 spots.

“I’m really proud of how our guys were able to bounce back after not only losing the doubles, but also after a tough loss last night,” said head coach Kerry McDermott.  “We came out today and knew what we had to do, and we went point for point tonight to earn this win.”

Many Huskers displayed composure in Saturday’s competition with four of the six matches played out through three sets. At No. 1 singles senior Adrian Szatmary defeated DePaul’s George Wang in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

Another Husker to battle through three sets and earning a victory was freshman David Bendheim at No. 2 singles.  Bendheim won his first set, 7-6, against DePaul’s Austin Doerner, but fell in the second set, 4-6.  With the match on the line, Bendheim excelled under pressure, winning his third set 7-6 to come away with a victory and moving his overall record to 5-2 for the season.

At No. 3 singles, senior James Clow had a come-from-behind win against Jose Moncada of DePaul.  After losing the first set to Moncada, 6-2, Clow remained competitive to win a close second set, 7-6, before he powered past Moncada in the third set, 6-2, to win the match.

Both sophomore Hendrik Stahmer and junior Mark Tate defeated their opponents in only two sets at the No. 4 and 5 spots respectively.  Now 6-1 on the year, Stahmer defeated DePaul’s Alasdair Graetz, 7-5, 6-3.  Inserted into the singles lineup for the second time this spring, Tate defeated Vanja Gregc, 6-3, 7-5, earning his second win during the spring season.

With a weekend off from competition ahead of them, the Huskers (4-4) return to action March 8, against East Tennessee State at home in the new Nebraska Tennis Center.
