Huskers Compete in California

This weekend the Huskers travel to Fresno, Calif., to face the Lions of Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Jan. 27, and the No. 45 Fresno State Bulldogs on Sunday, Jan. 28.

Traveling to this week’s dual matches will be David Bendheim, James Clow, Renato Melo, Hendrik Stahmer, Adrian Szatmary, Mark Tate, Francois Van Impe and Marton Zsiga. Tate will likely only compete in the doubles competition while teammate Stahmer will likely not compete in doubles in order to focus on singles.

Hosting this weekend’s competition is FresnoState. All matches will be played at the WathenTennisCenter in Fresno, Calif.

LMU will compete against FSU on Friday, Jan. 26 at 2:30 p.m.

A Look at the Competition

Although unranked, Loyola Marymount’s record stands at 1-1 with its only loss this season coming against No. 43 USC. The Lions opened up their season on a strong note, defeating Air Force 7-0 on Jan. 15. Senior Nico Terrien is 1-1 at the No. 1 spot for the Lions and will likely be matched up against Adrian Szatmary during Saturday’s competition.

Sunday’s match against No. 45 Fresno State gives the Huskers a chance to win their first match against a nationally ranked team this season. The Bulldogs tout a strong No. 1 singles competitor, No. 26 Jakub Cech. This weekend Cech will look to earn his first singles win of the season after he lost his first match against Cal Poly.

Szatmary Earns National Ranking

Going into the spring season, senior Adrian Szatmary has been nationally ranked No. 78 for singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Compiling a 9-5 record during the fall season, Szatmary’s most notable win was against Alabama’s Joseph Jung, ranked 35th nationally. Szatmary is also ranked No. 6 in the Central (V) Region.

Also earning recognition is senior James Clow who is currently ranked No. 16 in the Central (V) Region. Clow compiled an impressive 10-6 record during fall competition while primarily competing at the No. 2 spot.
