Reno, Nev.-Husker Amanda Burgoyne, a senior from Newport, Minn., leads the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials after two days of competition. Burgoyne, a three-time Team USA member, is on top of the women's field after 10 games with an average of 227.3 and a pinfall of 2,273.
"This past summer was very, very rough for me," Burgoyne said. "After Junior Gold and having many difficulties, I decided to make some changes to my game. I wanted to build more ball speed and have less movement in my backswing. I've been working very hard since last summer, and it's all coming together now."
Former Husker Shannon Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.) is tied with Lynda Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas) for fifth place with a total pinfall of 2,188.
Eight other current and former Huskers are competing in the trials, including former Huskers Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty, Kari Schwager, Jamie Martin and Mandy Pancoast, and current bowlers Adrienne Miller, Cassandra Leuthold, Lindsay Baker and Sarah Izydorek.
The Team USA trials will conclude on Jan. 12 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev. The top four finishers in the round-robin tournament will automatically make the 2007 Team USA. Complete coverage of the tournament can be found at www.bowl.com.
