Nebraska senior Lauren Bailey earned the honor as the first Big 12 women’s swimmer of the week for the 2006-07 season, announced Wednesday from the league office for meets through Oct. 22.
Bailey received the award after attaining a team-high six wins this year through three dual meets, including a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 16:48.46 in the 1,650-freestyle against Texas on Oct. 12.
In the first meet of the season, Bailey won three races (200-free, 500-free and 200-IM) in Nebraska’s 156-87 win over MissouriState. Most recently, she won the 1,000-free (10:10.15) against Texas A&M on Oct. 14 and also finished runner-up in the 500-free (4:59.28), just eight one-hundredths of a second behind senior teammate Kate Wheeler. On the previous day at the Big 12 Relays, Bailey was a member of the fourth-place finishing 1,500-free relay team.
The San Mateo, Calif., native is a three-time NCAA Championship qualifier and was a 2006 Honorable Mention All-American.
