Huskers March Past Rebels in Opener

Lincoln - The Nebraska rifle team started the 2006-07 season on the right foot Friday evening as it marched over Ole Miss in a 4,634-4,566 victory at the NU Rifle Range.

Senior Stacy Underwood topped the air rifle charts with a career-best 589 in the event.  Her previous record of 587 was shot against Air Force on Oct. 23, 2005.  With all seven Huskers earning spots in the top 10, the team began the night with a 2,343-2,316 win in air rifle.

"We're still not shooting as well as we have in our practice matches," Nebraska Head Coach Launi Meili said.  "I think we just have to get over that hump of knowing that this is competition, and we need to trust all of the hard work we've done so far."

Nebraska was led in smallbore by Kirsten Weiss, who shot a score of 577.  Underwood placed second for the Huskers with a 576, while freshman Chrstine Costello earned a third-place finish with a 575 in her first competition.

"I am happy the freshman had some significant improvements today compared to practice matches," Meili said.  "The things that they had been working on are really starting to come together."

Nebraska will meet up with Army on Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Nebraska Rifle Range for a 9 a.m. start.
