On the adjustments made to the secondary without Bowman

“He went down. That’s old news. It was sad. He was a big part of our defense but you have to move on and you have to develop guys and you have to get guys better.”

On ISU quarterback Bret Meyer

“You have to contain this guy. You want to run him out on the perimeter. Especially with all the (bootlegs) that they run, we have to make sure to do a good job of that.”

On the decision to play the base defense against playing the nickel defense

“We’re developing guys. I’m not going to take Stew Bradley off the field. I need speed rushers on the field. We’ve been doing that. We’re just trying to get the best 11 on the field all the time. We may see nickel this week. I don’t know.”

On the progress of cornerbacks, including Titus Brothers

“He’s doing a nice job. Ricky Thenarse is really starting to come along. Major Culbert is starting to come along. As those guys develop we’ll move forward and get more into our playbook.”

On the defense getting tired after playing the amount of plays against Kansas

“They’re well conditioned, and they pushed through pretty good. They really did. (Strength Coach Dave) Kennedy does a great job with those kids. Again, you have to keep a rotation. said Fortunately, our linebackers did in that game. I rotated three or four guys for a lot of players. Defensive linemen ? we’ll continue to rotate those guys. Those front guys are the guys we need.”
