Tulsa, Okla. ? Senior James Clow is the lone Husker men’s tennis player still alive after the first day of play at the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
Clow put up two wins today to advance to the third round of tournament play. In round one, Clow defeated Texas’ Jonah Kane-West, 7-5, 6-0. Carrying that momentum into the second round, Clow defeated Federico Chavarria of Oklahoma, 6-2, 6-4. Tomorrow Clow pairs up against Tiago Espirito Santo of WichitaState. Santo advanced to the third round by defeating Jacob McLeod of Morehead State, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round and via a bye in the second round.
Along with Clow, Hendrik Stahmer and Adrian Szatmary advanced to the second round of tournament play, but both lost in the second round and will not advance any further. In the first round, Stahmer defeated Diego Mattar of Texas-Arlington, 6-1, 6-0, and Szatmary defeated Butler’s James Low, 6-1, 6-2. Stahmer fell to LSU’s James Cluskey in two sets, 0-6, 2-6, in the second round, while Szatmary forced the match against Luis Daiz Barriga of Texas to three sets, before falling 7-5, 2-6, 2-6.
Arturo Navarro and Mark Tate also participated in the tournament, and although both put up strong battles, neither was able to able to come out with a win. Navarro went up on Marquette’s Trenton Hagan in the first set, 6-4, but was unable to hold on as he was defeated 2-6, 0-6 in sets two and three. Tate also battled in the first round, where he was defeated by Anders Dalskov of UC Santa Barbara in three sets, with two tiebreakers, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-7(3).
Clow is set to face Santo at 11 a.m. tomorrow on day two of the tournament.
