NU volunteer assistant coach Sammie Henson captured the bronze medal in the 55kg freestyle competition at the 2006 World Championships in Guangzhou, China. Henson, who will join the NU coaching staff after the World Championships, earned his third career international-level medal, adding the 2006 Worlds bronze to his 2000 Olympic silver medal and his 1998 World Championship.
Henson clinched the bronze with a 2-1, 2-0, win over Adcham Achilov of Uzbekistan. Henson won his first three matches but fell to the third-place match after losing to Radoslav Velikov of Bulgaria.
Earlier in the tournament, former NU All-American wrestler Justin Ruiz lost in the second round of the 96 kg Greco-Roman bracket to Korea’s Young Han Tae 3-0, 1-1, 1-1 and was eliminated when Tae lost in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the tournament, Ruiz defeated Rami Hietaniemi of Finland, 1-1, 2-0.
One more wrestler with Nebraska ties, three-time All-American and 1995 national champion Tolly Thompson, will wrestle at the World Championships. Thompson, wrestling at 120kg in freestyle, will wrestle on Friday in China.
