Lincoln -- Head coach Dan Kendig announced the hiring of Tim Garrison as assistant coach for the Nebraska women’s gymnastics team on Monday. Garrison will take over coaching duties for the Huskers on vault, floor and conditioning, and replaces former NU assistant Adrian Burde, who took a position at the University of Florida last month.
“We are so excited to have Tim join our staff,” Kendig said. “He comes with a wealth of knowledge and experiences at the highest levels that will greatly impact our program. We are fortunate to have him come to the University of Nebraska, and he will help make our staff an outstanding group of coaches that will take the Nebraska gymnastics program to even greater heights.”
Garrison served as head coach for 10 years at the Southern California Elite Gymnastics Academy (SCEGA) and was also an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton for two years. While at SCEGA, Garrison coached numerous state, regional and national champions on the elite and Junior Olympic levels, including former Utah All-American Rachel Tidd, who qualified for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. At the 2001 World Championships in Ghent, Belgium, he guided the U.S. team to a bronze medal.
Prior to his tenure at SCEGA, Garrison coached at Karolyi’s Gymnastics in Houston, Texas, alongside famed former U.S. Olympic Team Coach Bela Karolyi, as well as SCATS Gymnastics in Orange County, Calif. Garrison was a five-time Southern California Coach of the Year honoree and represented the United States as a coach in multiple international meets.
A native of Conroe, Texas, Garrison graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1995 with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. Tim and his wife, Rachel, have three children: Rayley, Taige and Teagan.
Nebraska, which returns seven All-Americans, will open the 2007 season on Jan. 5 at the Super Six Challenge in Fayetteville, Ark., with Arkansas, LSU, Florida, Penn State and Denver.
