Crimes Leads 49ers to Victory over Middle Tennessee

Lincoln ? Behind a season-high 17 kills from All-American Alexis Crimes, Long Beach State opened the Nebraska Invitational with a 30-25, 26-30, 30-24, 30-26 win over Middle Tennessee State Friday afternoon.

Crimes finished with a match-high 17 kills on .481 hitting while also adding seven blocks in the victory, as the 49ers improved to 4-1 on the season. Michalaela Hasalikova also finished in double figures, totaling 10 kills and nine blocks in the victory.

In the first game, Long Beach State took advantage of Middle Tennessee State six service errors, winning the game 30-25. Hasalikova led the team with four kills on .600 hitting while the 49ers out dug Middle Tennessee State 18 to seven in the opener. Middle Tennessee jumped out to a do 12-6 lead before Long Beach State answered with a 12-5 run run of its own. The two teams traded points before tying the score at 24, when the 49ers closed the first game with a 6-1 run which included kills from four different players.

In game two, Middle Tennessee jumped out to a 9-5 lead which they never relented and out-hit Long Beach State .237 to .122, to send the match to the locker room tied at one The Blue Raiders’ Ashley Adams led the team with six kills in game two alone, as MTSU led by as many as eight points in game two.

Long Beach State dominated game three with consistency as six different players snagged kills while holding Middle Tennessee State to a match-low .028 hitting percentage.

The 49ers secured game four with a defensive front, posting a match-high six blocks, including four block assists from both Nicole Vargas and Hasalikova. Vargas, the Long Beach setter, nearly finished with a triple double with 40 assists, 12 digs and eight blocks. 

Middle Tennesse’s Ashley Adams led the Blue Raiders’ with 17 kills on .268 hitting while also posting four blocks in the loss. Victoria Monasterolo and Quanshell Scott added 13 and 11 kills, respectively, as the Blue Raiders suffered their first loss.

Long Beach State will take on St. Mary’s at 5 p.m. in the first match on Saturday, while Middle Tennessee faces Nebraska in the second game at 7:30 p.m.
