Huskers Strap on the Pads

Lincoln- The Nebraska football team strapped on the pads for the first time during fall camp as the team underwent a 2 ?-hour practice inside the HawksChampionshipCenter on Monday afternoon. The practice was the fifth of the fall training camp, and the second straight day indoors as showers swept across the Lincoln area.

“It was a good practice today,” Head Coach Bill Callahan said. “We’re in the heart of our training camp going into two-a-days here in a couple days. This was our first day in pads and we had great contact and very high competitiveness.

“The physicality of the football team was tested today,” Callahan said. “Overall, we’re getting better in a lot of phases and a lot of different areas of our football team. The kids are very excited.”

Senior Isaiah Fluellen, a wide receiver for the Huskers through his first three years, had his first try at the defensive back position after attending morning meets with Coach Phil Elmassian.

“He (Fluellen) is a real unselfish guy,” Callahan said. “He wants to help the football team in any way he can and is just getting indoctrinated with what he needs to do at that position.”

Callahan also noted that junior offensive lineman Jordan Picou, who sprained his foot in Saturday’s practice, will be out 6-7 days, while the status of sophomore quarterback Harrison Beck has been answered after he requested and was granted his release from the University of Nebraska on Monday morning.

“I talked with Harrison on the telephone late this morning and with his own choice he has decided not to come back to Nebraska,” Callahan said. “I was disappointed that things occurred the way they did. I was hopeful that things could be rectified. We wish him the best of luck. We really appreciate his efforts and everything that he’s done for Nebraska and wish him well.”

Nebraska will continue fall camp with practice scheduled for 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
