On being excited to start the season

“I feel I’m 6 years old and it’s going to be Christmas morning on Saturday.  It’s going to be fun.  With all the upgrades, the new seats and the new big screen, the stadium will be rocking.  The first game always seems more special, just because it’s the first one.”

On being able to tackle the quarterback

“I’ll have to break the habit of pulling off the quarterback.  Hopefully, I won’t catch myself doing that in the game.  It will be fun to go out and let loose.”

On the expectations of the defense

“We have high expectations of ourselves.  We know that we can be good.  We have to go out to practice with the mentality that we never to take a play off.  All 11 of us have to get to the ball.  We come out every day with our lunch pails and hard hats, ready to go to work.  If you do it right in practice, it’ll happen right in the game.”

On the strength of the defense

“Every position is impressive.  I’m excited to see what Andre (Jones) does.  There’s a lot of talk about the front seven.  I expect us to be great because we have talent and experience up there, so we should do well.  I’m excited to see Andrew Shanle and Tierre Green back there.  It’ll be fun to see it all come together out there.”

On the need to pressure the quarterback after injuries to the secondary

“Every game, I’m going after the quarterback 100 percent.  I can’t ever take a play off because I have Zack Bowman back there.  There’s no added pressure, because we’re doing everything we can to get back there every play.”

On <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Louisiana Tech quarterback Zac Champion in his first career start

“This is a tough place to play as a first-year starter.  But he has good coaches, so he’ll be ready.  I’m sure they’ve been building their game plan for us all fall.  It will be fun to see if we can get to him early and take him out of his rhythm.  We’ll do what we can to make it unpleasant for him.  But, he’s going to be ready.  If he wasn’t good, he wouldn’t start, so he’s going to be ready for us.”

On preparing for Louisiana Tech

“It’s their first game, so there’s no current film.  You’re watching players that won’t play this year when you watch film, so you have to be ready to adapt to that.”

On Nebraska’s No. 20 Associated Press preseason ranking

“I don’t pay much attention to the rankings.  The only spot I’m worried about is where we are at the end of the season.  It’s early.  I’m not worried about it now.”
