Huskers Open Season with 1-1 Tie

Lincoln - The Nebraska soccer team played Wright State to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes Friday, despite outshooting the Raiders 15-8 in the Huskers' home opener in front of nearly 500 fans at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

NU placed more than half its shots on goal in the 110-minute contest and notched nine corner kicks to Wright State's two. The Huskers managed their lone goal on freshman Savannah Allen's rebound on a shot taken by sophomore Jessie Goodell in the 37th minute. Allen's goal capped a solid opening performance for the Husker freshmen, as seven newcomers made their collegiate debuts, including four who earned starts.

Megan Mattioda gave Wright State an early 1-0 lead when she bent a 20-yard free-kick through the Nebraska wall and past a diving Jamie Klages into the top corner of the net just over 14 minutes into the first half.

The Huskers controlled much of the tempo the rest of the period, culminating in Allen's first career goal. Trailing 1-0 with less than 10 minutes left in the half, Goodell broke through the Raider defense and fired a shot on goal. Wright State goalkeeper Stephanie Comisar made a diving deflection, but Allen collected the rebound and fired the equalizer into the back of the net.

Nebraska continued to strike throughout the remainder of the game, but was unable to beat Comisar.  The Huskers' best effort came in the first overtime when Allen nearly scored again, but her shot ricocheted off the near post.

Klages made three saves in goal for NU, while Comisar stopped seven shots for Wright State to preserve the 1-1 tie.

The tie was the first for the Huskers in a season opener since NU tied perennial powerhouse North Carolina, 1-1, on Aug. 30, 2002 at the Abbott Sports Complex. Prior to Friday's game, that contest had been the only season-opening tie in Husker history.

Nebraska continues its eight-game homestand with a pair of matches next weekend. The Huskers take on Big Ten foes Wisconsin on Friday at 5 p.m. and Iowa on Sunday at 1 p.m.  Both games can be heard live on Huskers.com.
