Fall Camp Heats Up

LINCOLN ? Temperatures rose past the century mark Saturday during the third day of fall camp, as the Nebraska football team put in another two-and-a-half hour practice in half pads on the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields.

NU Head Coach Bill Callahan addressed the media following the workout, relating that while the Huskers did hold another productive practice, precautions were taken to avoid any heat risk.

"Every seven periods, which would be every 25 minutes, we make sure that we broke (from practice) and got the players hydrated and just let them cool down," Callahan said. "That core body temperature can climb up there on a day like this."

Callahan followed the discussion of the heat by addressing the situation of sophomore quarterback Harrison Beck, who was absent from Saturday’s exercises.

"We contacted his parents," Callahan said. "He didn’t arrive for afternoon meetings, so we are concerned. We are trying to contact him at the moment. We are very concerned about what he is doing and where he is at right now.

"I talked to the players about it, and it really came as a surprise to all of us. He came in (during the morning) for regular meetings for his unit and installation meetings. He was here for the walk through, and then we didn’t see him after lunch."

In other fall camp news, Callahan announced the position change of sophomore Clayton Sievers, who moved from tight end to linebacker.

"We decided to put him on defense," Callahan said. "We had a long talk with him before camp and asked him if he would like to go to the defensive side of the ball, because he is a tremendous athlete. He has very good defensive skills. He is very aggressive and is good with his hands. He plays big, he’s strong, he’s physical and we feel he can be a fine linebacker for us."

Three new players donned yellow jerseys Saturday after posting impressive performances during Friday’s afternoon practice. Senior Barry Cryer and juniors Terrence Nunn and Andre Jones each received recognition for the first time this season. Jones is one of several newcomers earning reps during the early days of fall camp.

"Many of the newcomers received a lot of time today," Callahan said. "They need all the reps they can get right now. They will progress at their own rate, and that’s great as long as they can keep progressing.

Nebraska continues preseason practice Sunday afternoon.
