Lincoln - The University of Nebraska Media Relations Office earned 20 publication awards from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) during the 2005-06 season. The awards were officially announced during CoSIDA’s national convention in Nashville in early July.
Nebraska’s 20 CoSIDA awards ranked among the top schools in the nation, as the NU Media Relations Office has finished among the top five schools nationally in the overall publications contest for six straight years.
Among Nebraska’s impressive list of award-winning publications, eight Husker media and recruiting guides ranked among the top five in the nation in their respective sports, including three guides that captured "Best in the Nation" honors. The Nebraska women’s gymnastics guide created by student-assistant Bonnie Ryan earned top national honors, as did Kelli Kremlacek’s women’s rifle guide and Jessica Schwager’s women’s bowling media guide.
In addition to the three national champion publications, the Nebraska volleyball media guide cover created by Megan McLaughlin and Shamus McKnight was voted the nation’s "Best Cover" in its contest.
McKnight’s Nebraska baseball guide earned runner-up honors, as did McLaughlin’s Nebraska women’s swimming and diving poster. The Nebraska wrestling guide created by Nate Rohr and the softball media guide created by Matt Smith each finished third in the country, while Andy Anderson’s men’s and women’s track and field media guide finished fourth nationally. McLaughlin’s Nebraska baseball poster also finished fourth in the nation, while the NU men’s and women’s cross country media guide created by Anderson and Brandon Gries rounded out the list of top-five showings for the Huskers.
In addition to the top-five national finishes, six Husker publications were voted "Best in the District" in their respective contests, including the baseball, softball, track and field, men’s tennis and women’s golf media guides, along with the women’s swimming and diving poster. The volleyball and soccer guides and the baseball poster added runner-up honors in their district competitions.
Many of Nebraska’s top publications were written and designed by graduate interns Andy Anderson and Matt Smith, graduate assistant Sarah Sherman, and student assistants Marcus Dawson, Brandon Gries, Kelli Kremlacek, Nate Rohr, Jessica Schwager and Dustin Tomes.
Nebraska Media Relations Keith Mann, Assistant Media Relations Directors Shamus McKnight and Jerry Trickie, Athletic Department Photographer Scott Bruhn and Administrative Assistant Vicki Cartwright all assist in coordinating and producing Nebraska’s award-winning publications. Athletic Department Design Coordinator Megan McLaughlin and Director of Media Relations Operations Jeff Griesch supervise the production schedule for all of NU’s publications.
"The number of award-winning guides that we’ve produced over the years is just another example of the entire athletic department’s commitment to all of its programs," Griesch said. "We have talented students, interns and full-time employees who come together and work as a team to produce all of our guides."
