Husker Baseball in the Summer Leagues

With the summer season nearing its midway point, Huskers.com is providing an update on many of the Nebraska baseball players in summer leagues around the country.

*-Right-hander Mike Nihsen has been a stalwart of the Duluth Huskies’ staff in the Northwoods League, going 5-2 with a 1.58 in eight appearances. The Ralston, Neb., product is tied for the Northwoods League lead in wins and is fifth in innings pitched (41.2) while holding opponents to a .204 average. He is one of nine Huskers spending the summer in the Northwoods League. Jeff Lanning is also putting together a strong summer in the Northwoods League for Waterloo, hitting .310 with a homer and 12 RBIs. Lanning ranks eighth in the league in hitting. Zach Herr is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA and a save in 10 appearances for Rochester, which is 23-10 and in first place in its division in the Northwoods League.

*-In the Cape Cod League, Tony Watson has gotten off to a blistering start, going 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA in three appearances. Watson, a third-team All-American in 2006, has a 20-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 20 innings of work in the Cape. He earned his third victory of the year on Monday, allowing one run and fanning seven in a 5-1 win over Brewester. Right-hander Johnny Dorn is looking for his first win in the Cape, as he is 0-3 with a 4.29 ERA in four appearances. Dorn, who is among the league leaders with 21 innings pitched, comes off his best outing of the summer, a complete-game three-hitter to Orleans on Sunday, but took the loss in Harwich’s 2-1 setback.

*-In the Coastal Plains League, Bryce Nimmo has gotten off to a quick start for Fayetteville (N.C.) as the team in 19-6 on the season. In eight games, Nimmo is hitting .333 with a homer and four RBIs.

*-In the M.I.N.K. league, a quartet of Huskers have helped the Beatrice Bruins to an 11-11 record. Offensively, Andrew Brown (.296-4-14) and Jake Mort (.290-0-3) have seen time in the Bruins’ lineup, while Erik Bird (0-1, 1.59 ERA) has anchored the Bruins bullpen. In Liberal, Jake Opitz enjoyed a big night Tuesday’s win over Amarillo, going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs to help Liberal up its record to 16-14 in the Jayhawk League.
