With the summer season nearing its midway point, Huskers.com is providing an update on many of the Nebraska baseball players in summer leagues around the country.
*-Right-hander Mike Nihsen has been a stalwart of the Duluth Huskies’ staff in the Northwoods League, going 5-2 with a 1.58 in eight appearances. The Ralston, Neb., product is tied for the Northwoods League lead in wins and is fifth in innings pitched (41.2) while holding opponents to a .204 average. He is one of nine Huskers spending the summer in the Northwoods League. Jeff Lanning is also putting together a strong summer in the Northwoods League for Waterloo, hitting .310 with a homer and 12 RBIs. Lanning ranks eighth in the league in hitting. Zach Herr is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA and a save in 10 appearances for Rochester, which is 23-10 and in first place in its division in the Northwoods League.
*-In the Cape Cod League, Tony Watson has gotten off to a blistering start, going 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA in three appearances. Watson, a third-team All-American in 2006, has a 20-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 20 innings of work in the Cape. He earned his third victory of the year on Monday, allowing one run and fanning seven in a 5-1 win over Brewester. Right-hander Johnny Dorn is looking for his first win in the Cape, as he is 0-3 with a 4.29 ERA in four appearances. Dorn, who is among the league leaders with 21 innings pitched, comes off his best outing of the summer, a complete-game three-hitter to Orleans on Sunday, but took the loss in Harwich’s 2-1 setback.
*-In the Coastal Plains League, Bryce Nimmo has gotten off to a quick start for Fayetteville (N.C.) as the team in 19-6 on the season. In eight games, Nimmo is hitting .333 with a homer and four RBIs.
*-In the M.I.N.K. league, a quartet of Huskers have helped the Beatrice Bruins to an 11-11 record. Offensively, Andrew Brown (.296-4-14) and Jake Mort (.290-0-3) have seen time in the Bruins’ lineup, while Erik Bird (0-1, 1.59 ERA) has anchored the Bruins bullpen. In Liberal, Jake Opitz enjoyed a big night Tuesday’s win over Amarillo, going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs to help Liberal up its record to 16-14 in the Jayhawk League.
