Christy Selected by Minnesota Twins

Lincoln ? University of Nebraska catcher Jeff Christy became the second Husker picked in the 2006 MLB Draft, as he was selected in the sixth round (No. 186 overall) by the Minnesota Twins.

Christy, the second Husker selected on Tuesday, became the highest Husker catcher selected since Bill McGuire was the No. 27 overall pick of the Seattle Mariners in 1985. It is the second time that Christy has been drafted in his career, as he was a 49th-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2002 coming out of Lincoln Southeast High School. It also marks the first time in school history where two players from Lincoln were chosen in the first six rounds.

A two-year starter behind the plate, Christy had his best season in 2006, hitting .284 with eight homers and 32 RBIs, while leading the Huskers to 42 wins and a No. 6 national seed. He also threw out 30 percent of base runners, as Nebraska allowed just 39 stolen bases this season.  An honorable-mention All-Big 12 pick, Christy was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team after hitting .363 with two homers, four RBIs and two stolen bases.

Christy caught a school-record 64 games behind the plate in 2005, hitting .236 with 32 RBIs while throwing out 45 percent of runners, including 8-of-11 runners in the postseason.
