All-American Chanek Earns Degree

Lincoln ? Six-time rifle All-American Misty Chanek was among 54 Nebraska student-athletes across all sports who earned their degrees on Saturday, May 6, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.

Chanek, who led the Huskers to their best season in school history with a second-place team finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships, earned her bachelor’s degree in horticulture from NU.

A three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll after transferring to NU from Tennessee Tech as a sophomore in 2002, Chanek earned Great America Rifle Conference Senior-of-the-Year honors in 2006, after leading Nebraska to its second consecutive conference team title.

At the 2006 NCAA Championships, Chanek posted the best individual finish of her career with a fourth-place showing in air rifle, and captured All-America honors in both the air rifle and smallbore as a senior.

Former Husker shooter Karen Aspden joined Chanek on Saturday, earning a bachelor of science degree in biological sciences. For Aspden, it was her second undergraduate degree at NU, after earning her degree in criminal justice in August of 2005.

Chanek joined an impressive list of 54 Husker student-athletes across all sports to earn their degrees in May of 2006. NU's class of student-athlete graduates is made up of student-athletes from 17 U.S. states, including 20 Nebraska natives, three athletes from two Canadian provinces, one student-athlete from Puerto Rico, and one athlete from Serbia & Montenegro. The class also includes 17 student-athletes who graduated with eligibility remaining in their respective sports.

The class included nine student-athletes who combined for 24 All-America awards during their careers, including two athletes who combined for three individual national titles.

Overall, 84 Husker student-athletes have graduated this academic year before summer commencement exercises in August. Nebraska continues to lead the Big 12 and rank among the top schools in the nation with an exhausted eligibility graduation rate of 93 percent.
