Huskers Take on Texas for Big 12 Title Game Berth
Today’s Preview: Nebraska looks to earn a berth in the Big 12 Championship title game, as the Huskers take on top-seeded Texas this afternoon. The Huskers are 2-0 in pool play and 41-14 overall after wins over Baylor (3-2) and Texas Tech (6-4). Texas (40-18) is also 2-0 with victories over the Texas Tech (4-0) and Baylor (16-8). The winner of today’s matchup will take on either Missouri or Kansas in Sunday’s nationally televised title game. Saturday’s contest features two teams in the top-six of both RPI projections (Boydsworld and warrennolen) and the Big 12’s only 40-win squads. Oklahoma or Oklahoma State will join the Huskers and Longhorns in the 40-win club this evening, as they square off at 5 p.m.
At the Bricktown Ballpark: The Huskers are 26-7 all-time at the Big 12 Championship and 22-4 all-time at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. NU is currently riding a seven-game win streak in Big 12 Tournament play dating back to last season. Texas has won 2-of-3 meetings between both team at the league tourney (2002 title game, 2 meetings in 2004), but have never faced each other at the Bricktown Ballpark
Thursday (Nebraska 6, Texas Tech 4): The No. 14 Nebraska baseball team erupted for four runs with two outs in a decisive sixth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit for a 6-4 victory over Texas Tech Thursday night. Jake Opitz provided the big blow, a two-run double in the sixth, while Jeff Christy had two hits, including his eighth homer of the year. Joba Chamberlain improved to 6-4 with the win, allowing four runs over seven innings, as he fanned seven en route to his first win since April 13.
Today’s Starter Johnny Dorn: Sophomore right-hander Johnny Dorn enters today’s game with a 9-4 record and a 3.44 ERA in 13 starts, ranking fourth in the Big 12 in wins, third in shutouts (one), fourth in complete games (two) and 12th in ERA ? Is 21-6 in just two seasons at Nebraska, ranking sixth on NU’s career wins list ? Went 6-3 with a 3.49 ERA in nine Big 12 starts, tying for the league lead in wins and ranking eighth in innings pitched (56.2) and 10th in ERA ? Looks to rebound after dropping his last two outings, as he allowed one earned run over seven innings in a loss to Oklahoma on May 21 ? Fired seven shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out seven in a win at No. 5 Texas on April 23 ? Is 1-0 in his career in the Big 12 Tournament, tossing as complete game five-hitter against Texas Tech in 2005
