Four Huskers Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

Oklahoma City, Okla. ? Four seniors from the Nebraska softball team were named to the 2006 academic All-Big 12 first team, the league office announced on Wednesday.

Among those honored were Lizzy Aumua, an outfielder from Santa Fe Springs, Calif., KoKo Tacha, an outfielder from ManhattanKan., Trisha Tannahill, an outfielder from Overland Park, Kan., and Jessica Yoachim, an infielder from Arkansas City, Kan.

 

Aumua, Tannahill and Yoachim each earned their bachelor's degrees from the University of Nebraska on Saturday, May 6.

 

Tacha highlights the selections, as she earned first-team honors for the third consecutive season. Aumua, in her second year at Nebraska, was named an academic All-Big 12 honoree for the first time in her career this season, while Tannahill and Yoachim ended their impressive Big 12 careers by earning their third academic accolades, including two consecutive first-team selections.

 

A total of 59 student-athletes were honored by the Big 12 Conference. Nominated by each institution, the academic all-league softball squad consisted of 43 members with 27 on the first team and 16 on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

 

To qualify, student-athletes must keep a 3.00 GPA or higher and must have participated in 60 percent of the team’s scheduled contests.

 

The Huskers will compete this week at the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla. Nebraska opens play tonight at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of a play-in game between No. 7 seed Missouri and 10th-seeded Texas Tech.
