NU Announces Schedule, Team Captains

Lincoln, Neb.? Nebraska head cross country Head Coach Jay Dirksen announced the men’s and women’s team captains and schedule for the upcoming 2006 season on Tuesday.

Senior Bryce Dickmeyer will serve as the men’s captain for the second year in a row, while junior Betsy Miller and senior Kim Pancoast will head the women’s squad.

Dickmeyer, a co-captain in 2005, will be only the fourth men’s runner in NU history to serve as a captain for consecutive seasons. The Fremont, Neb., native was named the most improved runner in 2005 and will be the only senior on a men’s team featuring increased numbers from a year ago. He set a career best in the 10K (32:06) at the Chile Pepper Festival, which was more than a minute off his previous best. His highest placing (third) came at the Creighton/UNO Classic.

Miller and Pancoast were key ingredients on the women’s team that finished fifth at both the Big 12 Championships and NCAA Midwest Regional. Miller was named the most improved runner on the women’s side last season, while Pancoast placed in the top 10 on three occasions and earned her third letter in as many years.

Nebraska will face a familiar schedule that includes the same meets from the 2005 season. The Huskers will stay in-state for its first two meets before taking to the road for three straight competitions prior to the Big 12 Championships on Oct. 27 in Lawrence, Kan. The NCAA Midwest Region Championships will be held in St. Paul, Minn., on Nov. 11, followed by the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 20.
