Dorn, Jensen Named to Dick Howser Trophy Watch List

Lincoln - A pair of Nebraska baseball players were honored Monday, as pitchers Brett Jensen and Johnny Dorn were selected to the initial Dick Howser Award Watch List.

Jensen is one of the nation’s premier closers, going 5-0 with eight saves and a 2.20 ERA in 19 appearances. Jensen is third in the Big 12 in saves and is holding opponents to a .156 batting average over 32.2 innings. Jensen, who has struck out 27 and walked six this season, already holds NU’s single-season (16) and career (26) records for saves.

Dorn, a third-time All-American as a freshman, has been one of the Big 12’s best starters in 2006, posting an 8-2 record and 3.14 ERA in 10 starts. The right-hander is second in the Big 12 in wins, sixth in opponent batting average (.242) and ninth in ERA. Dorn has a career 20-4 record at NU, as he is tied for seventh in school history in wins.

The membership of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association will choose the Dick Howser Trophy based on three rounds of voting. The 2006 winner will be announced at the College World Series in Omaha on Friday, June 16, at 10 a.m. (CDT). Both Dorn and Jensen will look to follow in the footsteps of 2005 winner Alex Gordon.

The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
