Huskers Hold Own Against Canadians

Lincoln - Jessie Goodell scored Nebraska's lone goal in the 71st minute, as the Husker soccer team fell to the Canadian World Cup Team, 4-1, at the Nebraska Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.

Although the Huskers suffered the setback on the scoreboard in their fourth match of the spring exhibition season, Nebraska Coach John Walker said he was encouraged by NU's performance against the Canadians.

"We had four or five very good scoring chances," Walker said. "We only came up with the one goal, but I was pleased with the pressure we were able to put on them. Now we have to work on improving our efficiency in the final third of the field."

The Canadians controlled the flow of play for much of the contest, but Nebraska produced five solid shots on former NU goalkeeper and current Canadian National Team starter Karina LeBlanc, including Goodell's second-half goal.

LeBlanc made several strong saves, including a sprawling dive and punch toward her left to save a goal early in the second half.

Charmaine Hooper opened the scoring with her goal in the eighth minute of play for the Canadians, while Rhian Wilkinson added the game-winning goal in the 18th minute for Canada. Christine Sinclair added the final two goals of the day for Canada's World Cup squad.

Nebraska will conclude its spring schedule next Friday when the Huskers travel to North Platte to face Colorado.
