After one day of competition under its belt, the No. 1 Nebraska bowling team sits in the top spot at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Houston, Texas. The Huskers finished Thursday’s qualifying rounds in superior fashion, dominating the field of competition with a total pinfall of 7,773. Nebraska was followed by Fairleigh Dickinson, which finished second with a pinfall of 7,568.
Junior Adrienne Miller finished third for the Huskers, claiming a spot on the first day’s all-tournament team. Miller averaged a 205.5 over four games and rolled a total pinfall of 822. Junior Amanda Burgoyne also contributed to the team’s success, as she placed 10th with an average of 193.75.
Senior Karla Engh wrapped up the day in 15th place with a 188 average, while senior Jamie Martin averaged 188 for a 17th-place finish. Sophomore Lindsay Baker placed 19th and averaged a 186 to finish out the day.
“Our goal today was to end up in the top seed,” Nebraska Coach Bill Straub said. “Thankfully we achieved that goal.”
The Huskers will return to action Friday at 8:30 a.m. in Emerald Bowling Lanes to compete against No. 8-seeded New JerseyCity. Should the Huskers win their first round, they will play again at 6:30 p.m. The top three teams will advance to Saturday’s final championship rounds, which will be televised by ESPN on tape-delay on Sunday, April 16, at 2:00 p.m. (CST)
