Lincoln, Neb. - The No. 59 Nebraska men's tennis team honored seniors Jerry Posch and Joerg Barthel in their final home match at the Nebraska Tennis Center in the Huskers' 5-2 loss to No. 19 Texas A&M, Sunday afternoon.
Both seniors helped the Huskers (10-10, 0-5 Big 12) claim the doubles point to start the match well, with victories in the top two spots. Posch and sophomore Mark Tate defeated Brett Joelson and Bryan Wooten, 9-7, at the No. 1 spot, while Barthel and junior Adrian Szatmary beat Matt Bain and Jerry Makowski, 8-6, at the No. 2 doubles slot.
In singles, junior James Clow claimed the Huskers' lone win by defeating Wooten in the No. 2 spot, 7-5, 6-3, extending his record to 11-8. Posch faced his eighth nationally ranked opponent of the season, forcing eighth-ranked Makowski into three sets, but fell 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.
"This was an extremely competitive match," Coach Kerry McDermott said. "We had a great opportunity to pull an upset after winning the doubles point, both teams fought hard, we just didn't get it done in the end."
McDermott had some special words for the seniors, saying both players have demonstrated tremendous leadership through the years.
"Jerry (Posch) has taught the younger players that if you work hard on the court as well as in the classroom, good things will happen," McDermott said. "Joerg (Barthel) has shown that he really loves the game of tennis and he sets the tone for other guys to follow his passion for the game."
The Huskers return to action when they face No. 42 Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, April 21 at 2 p.m.
