Birmingham, Ala. - The No. 1 Nebraska bowling team held off pressure from 13 ranked teams on Sunday to secure a win at the Alabama A&M Holiday Classic.
Nebraska rolled a total pinfall of 10,671 in the two-day event held at the HolidayBowlFunCenter. Nebraska was followed by Vanderbilt, which finished with a pinfall of 10,539 to place second.
The Husker victory gave Nebraska school records for consecutive and season tournament wins. Nebraska improved to 6-0 on the season and has strung together 11 consecutive tournament titles since the Brunswick Coca-Cola Classic on Jan. 30, 2005.
“We had a rough start yesterday, but we were able to pull it together today and come out with the win,” Nebraska Coach Bill Straub said. “I was proud of the team’s effort.”
The Huskers were led by junior Amanda Burgoyne, who placed fifth with an average of 222. Burgoyne was one of three Huskers to post top-10 finishes, as senior Jamie Martin recorded a 222 average for seventh, while sophomore Lindsay Baker placed ninth with a 215 average.
The Huskers return to action March 18 at the Vanderbilt University Invitational held in AMF PLA MOR lanes.
