Lincoln ? The NCAA announced today the field for the 2006 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships in Norman, Okla. Overall, Nebraska was one of 12 teams to qualify for the event.
The Huskers earned their fourth consecutive bid to the team competition, which begins on Thursday, April 6 with Session I beginning at 1 p.m. and Session II at 7 p.m. CST. Nebraska will compete in the second session along with Oklahoma, Illinois, Cal, Michigan and Temple, and will begin the evening on the high bar with the subsequent rotations in Olympic order.
The top three programs from each session advance to the team finals at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 7 and the meet wraps up with the individual event finals on Saturday, April 8 at 7 p.m.
Following an outstanding performance the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on March 25, the Huskers jumped two spots in the team standings from 11th to ninth. Additionally, Nebraska made the leap into the nation’s top pommel horse spot with a national qualifying average of 34.28. This is the first time in 2006 that the Huskers have led the nation on any event.
Individually, several Husker gymnasts claim spots among the nation’s top 20 in multiple events. Junior Jason Wassung moved into the No. 7 spot in the all-around rankings this week, while sophomore Stephen T?trault improved to 10th. Wassung is also ranked 14th on the pommel horse and 19th on parallel bars, while T?trault is seventh on pommel horse. Meanwhile, senior Derric Wood moved into the No. 13 spot on pommel horse and is also ranked 14th on high bar, while freshman T.J. Schmidt is 16th on the parallel bars. Lastly, seniors Nic Matthews and Tony Burtle both made their debut in the GymInfo vault rankings this week with Matthews in 18th and Burte tied for 19th.
