Huskers Wrap Up Second Day of Spring Practice

Lincoln- The Nebraska football team continued spring practice with a two-hour session on Friday inside the HawksChampionshipCenter, as the snow continued to keep the team indoors.

After stretching, the team broke into position drills during which safeties and special teams coach Bill Busch directed the safeties, including senior Brandon Rigoni and junior Ben Eisenhart, on how to strip the ball from the receiver.

On the other side of the field, the competition surrounding the I-Back position was heating up as players such as sophomores Marlon Lucky and Cody Glenn received encouragement from running backs coach Randy Jordan as they practiced drills on the blocking sled.

“When you look at what we have in the stable, we’ve got great returning guys like (sophomore I-Backs) Marlon (Lucky) and Cody (Glenn),” Jordan said. “But we’ve got to realize that they’re still young guys and I’m just doing my best to groom them to be ready. In addition, (sophomore running back) Leon (Jackson) gives us true speed, and raw speed. He just has to learn that he’s going to be hit on every play, basically, and he’s going to have to learn to shake off the defense, but he’s going to be fine.”

The end of practice included seven-on-seven drills during which four different quarterbacks saw action, followed by a focus on just the quarterbacks for offensive coordinator Jay Norvell, as he prepped the group for their first full-pad session as a team tomorrow.

“The first practice where we get full pads on is just such a rush, and the guys get really cranked up and get into it,” Norvell said. “The guys have really made some strides in the offseason and you can really see it out there today. Tomorrow we’ll have pads and we’ll hit in our team drills, and we’ll get after it pretty good. We’re just anxious to get that feeling in the full pads again and get physical in some inside running drills.”

Friday’s practice marks the last practice in helmets and shorts, as the team will see their first full-pad workout of the spring on Saturday morning. The 2006 Husker Youth Experience is also scheduled following Saturday morning’s practice, as it will feature Nebraska-area youth from age eight through the eighth grade from 45 different counties in the state of Nebraska, as well as three registered youths from out-of-state.
