Phoenix, Ariz. ? Behind a 3-for-4 effort from former Husker Adam Stern, Canada pulled a shocking 8-6 upset of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic Wednesday afternoon.
Stern, who had two hits in Canada’s come-from-behind win over South Africa in Tuesday’s opener, singled, tripled and hit an inside-the-park homer as Canada jumped to an 8-0 lead and held off Team USA’s comeback bid.
“We know we don’t have the same depth as the U.S., but that’s why we play these games,” said Stern “Over 162 games, I’m not sure we’d get the same results, but in a short tournament like this where just one game can make a big difference you just have to go out there and play like it’s your last game."
With the win, Canada moves into first place in Pool B with a 2-0 record heading into its next game against Mexico Thursday at 7 p.m.
The former Husker, who played at NU from 1999 to 2001 drove in four runs on Wednesday and is 5-for-7 in two World Baseball Classic games. Stern also shined with the glove, preserving Canada’s two-run lead with a running catch against the wall in center to rob Chase Utley of an extra-base hit.
