Huskers Fight Off Furman

Tallahassee, Fla. - The No. 75 Nebraska men's tennis team defeated Furman, 4-3, in Tallahassee, Fla., on Friday at a quad tournament hosted by No. 22 Florida State at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.

In singles, junior Adrian Szatmary defeated Ben Pauluhn, 6-3, 6-3, 7-4 (6) at the No. 1 position, while fellow junior James Clow downed Greg Maarschalk, 6-3, 7-6 (3), in the No. 3 spot.

Senior Joerg Barthel won in his first match since the spring 2005 season, beating Bo Ladyman 6-4, 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 4 slot, but senior Jerry Posch was defeated at No. 2 by Andy Juc, 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-2.

Nebraska's newcomers Mark Tate and Renato Melo played in the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively.  Tate beat Daniel Knause 6-3, 6-3, while Melo fell to Brian Crook, 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles action Posch and Tate defeated Will Kieffer and Scott Kahler, 8-2.  Clow and Szatmary dropped their match to Pauluhn and Maarschalk, 8-3, while Melo and Barthel also lost, 8-1, to Crook and Ladyman.

"It was a real good competitive match," said Coach Kerry McDermott. "Jerry (Posch) and Mark (Tate) played really good and it was some of the best tennis they've played this season.  We just didn't produce in doubles, but we didn't let the doubles point affect our attitude.  It was a tough match, but we found a way to win and that's good to know as a coach."

Nebraska returns to the court on Saturday at 10 a.m. to take on No. 22 Florida State, with a matchup against No. 53 Penn to follow at 3 p.m.
