Huskers Look to Move Up

Columbia, Mo. ? The Huskers will have an opportunity to score points in five individual swimming events and the 400-yard freestyle relay in Saturday night’s finals as the Huskers completed the sixth session of the 2006 Big 12 Championships at the MizzouAquaticCenter in Columbia, Mo., on Saturday morning.

 

Junior Bailey Ingles qualified for the finals of the 200-yard butterfly and four more qualified for the consolation finals as Nebraska hopes to move up from fifth place in the final session which begins at 6 p.m., Saturday.

“I think this morning showed that we have resiliency,” Assistant Coach Doug Humphrey said. “We are set up nicely for a great finals session. Not only do we have a strong 1,650-freestyle group to swim tonight, but we now also can score in the other events that we qualified in.”

 

Junior Bailey Ingles swum the sixth-fastest time in the 200-yard butterfly prelims in a season-best 2:03.97. Ingles won the consolation finals of the 200-yard butterfly at last year’s Big 12 Championships, and she was one of two Huskers to set season bests in the race as freshman Christina Yemm qualified for her first consolation finals as a Husker with a 16th-place overall finish in 2:08.20, two seconds off her previous best.

 

Fellow Sterling, Ill., native Lynn Siemert also snuck into the consolation finals with a 16th-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 51.96.

 

The Huskers saw more success in the 200-yard breaststroke as senior Rachel Schlatter and sophomore Adrienne Goodman placed 11th and 15th, respectively. Schlatter, who placed fifth in last night’s 100-yard breaststroke final, swum a season-best time of 2:20.88. Goodman was 10th last year in the 200-yard breaststroke at the conference meet and will have an opportunity to match that placing in the consolation finals as she was clocked in a career-best 2:21.10, topping her old mark set at last year’s conference meet by one one-hundredth of a second.

 

The women’s preliminary round of the platform dive begins at 1:45 p.m.
