Huskers Close Out Weekend at NCAA Qualifier

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Colorado Springs, Colo. ? The Nebraska rifle team closed out a long weekend on the road by shooting a team score of 4,666 at the NCAA Qualifier on Saturday on the Air Force Academy campus.  The score, combined with NU’s regular-season three-score average of 4,685, will determine Nebraska’s fate in gaining entrance to the national championships in April.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Air Force, which shot at the same venue and hosted the event, shot a team score of 4,629.

The Huskers were led in smallbore by senior Misty Chanek who tabbed a season-high tying score of 591.  Chanek was followed by junior Kristina Fehlings who shot a 584.

The air rifle finished in a rare form as the Huskers did not mark the match-high score.  Instead, Air Force’s Clifton Mulkey notched a top score of 586 followed by Chanek and sophomore Andrea Franz?n with identical scores of 585.

Nebraska’s team score of 4,666 was nearly 20 points lower than its score of 4,682 that the Huskers shot just two days earlier at the NRA Sectional.  The major difference was noticeably in air rifle, where NU shot a score of 2,338 as compared to the score of 2,350 it shot at the sectional on Thursday.

The Huskers will now return to Lincoln where they will have two weeks of training before setting out to defend their conference championship title at the Great America Rifle Conference championships in Oxford, Miss., on Feb. 25 and 26.
