Jonesboro, Ark. -- The top-rated Husker bowling team proved worthy of its No. 1 ranking after winning the Arkansas State Invitational on Sunday. The Huskers went 8-2 over the two-day event held at the Jonesboro Bowling Center, picking up its fourth title of the season.
Junior Amanda Burgoyne topped the all-tournament team, placing first with a 215 average. Senior Jamie Martin averaged 213 to finish second and a spot on the all-tournament team. Rounding out the top five and the all-tournament team was sophomore Lindsay Baker with a 205 average, who finished fifth. Senior Karla Engh placed sixth with a 205 average, while junior Adrienne Miller averaged a 182 for 18th place.
This weekend, the NCAA released its first poll of the season, as Nebraska was ranked first. Farleigh Dickinson and the 2005 NCAA runner-up Central Missouri State rounded out the top-three teams. Other ranked teams included New Jersey City University, fourth; Maryland-Eastern Shore, fifth; Bethune-Cookman, sixth; Vanderbilt, seventh; Alabama A&M, eighth; Arkansas State, ninth; and Southern University, 10th.
"We were thankfully successful this weekend," Coach Bill Straub said. "The team gained confidence after hearing they were first in the NCAA Coaches poll."
Nebraska Native Places Fourth at Tournament
Samantha Berke (pronounced Burr-Kee), a bowler for Arkansas State, finished fourth at the Arkansas State Invitational with a 206 average. Berke, formerly from Beatrice, Neb., is the niece of head coach Bill Straub.
