Lincoln, Neb.?With two wins in the opening weekend, the Nebraska women’s tennis team moved up one spot to No. 37 in the ITA National Rankings released Tuesday. The No. 37 ranking marks NU’s highest ranking since the Huskers were ranked No. 37 on April 28, 2005.
Nebraska has shot out of the gates quickly in 2006. In the opening weekend of play, NU cruised to two-straight victories over ColoradoState and Illinois-Chicago.
On Friday, Jan. 27, the Huskers defeated CSU, 5-2, in the first match of the season. In doubles, sophomore Ellinor Zugner and senior Jennifer rallied from a 7-4 deficit and defeated the Rams’ Jessica Jones and Greer Satherlie, 9-7, to clinch the doubles point.
The Big Red’s touted freshman, No. 36 Kim Hartmann, saw her first action of the spring season as a Husker beginning at the No. 1 singles spot. Hartmann, after posting a 7-2 fall record, did not look back and rolled over CSU’s Emily Kirchem, 6-1, 6-1, and on Sunday blanked UIC’s Callan Smith, 6-0, 6-0. The Huskers defeated the Flames, 6-1.
The No. 37 Huskers hit the courts on Friday, Feb. 3, at 4 p.m. at the WoodsTennisCenter when they face Air Force.
