West Point, N.Y. ? The Nebraska rifle team continued its winning ways on Saturday with a victory over defending national champion Army, 4,676-4,657. This is NU’s seventh consecutive win of the 2005-06 season, thus extending its regular-season winning streak to 13 since the Huskers last loss to the Black Knights on Nov. 13 of 2004. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
With the win, <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska breaks Army’s unbeaten streak, which up until now had stood at six. The Huskers also tied their all-time series record with the Black Knights at 3-3.
NU won both the smallbore (2,323) and the air rifle (2,353) as a team and also placed Husker athletes on top of each event individually. Senior Misty Chanek took top honors in the smallbore with a score of 587 and went on to tie junior teammate Kristina Fehlings (591) for first-place in air rifle. Chanek’s score of 591 in air rifle is a season-high for the senior captain as is Nebraska’s team score of 2,353 in the event.
The Huskers remain on the road throughout the holiday weekend as they travel to Palmyra, Penn. on Monday, Jan. 16 to take on both Palmyra and West Virginia starting at 7 a.m. central time. The match will wrap up the regular season for Nebraska, which will take a short break before getting into postseason action on Feb. 9 in Colorado Springs, Colo. for the NCAA Sectional.
