Pavan and Houghtelling Earn Academic All-American Honors

Lincoln ? Nebraska’s Sarah Pavan and Christina Houghtelling made history on Wednesday when they became the first two Husker volleyball players to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in the same season.

The 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America? Women’s Volleyball Team was announced Wednesday after voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The honors by Pavan and Houghtelling increased the Husker volleyball program’s total to 28 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards all-time, while increasing Nebraska’s NCAA record to 224 Academic All-Americans across all sports. Nebraska was the only school to have more than one first-team selection, as only six players were chosen for first-team honors.

Pavan, who carries a 4.00 GPA in biochemistry, was named the Big 12 Player of the Year on Monday, as she averages 3.79 kills, 1.67 digs, 1.27 blocks and 0.31 aces per game. A first-team All-American in 2004, she ranks among the league leaders in five categories, including seventh in the Big 12 in both kills and hitting percentage. Off the court, Pavan has been an active participant in NU’s outreach programs, volunteering for the Friendship Home Safequarters program and the Fall Tour of Excellence in Blair

Houghtelling, who carries a 3.90 GPA in elementary education with a coaching emphasis, earned All-Big 12 honors in 2005, as she averages 3.65 kills, 2.47 digs and 1.01 blocks per game, ranking among the Big 12 leaders in hitting percentage (.360, sixth) and kills (3.65, 10th). Off the court, Houghtelling is a member of NU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, she is involved in numerous community activities, including the Fall Tour of Excellence and the Juvenile Diabetes Walk. She spent last summer playing for the USA Volleyball A-2 National Team.

Pavan and Houghtelling return to action this Friday, as the No. 1 ranked Nebraska volleyball team begins NCAA Tournament action against Alabama A&M. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
