Lincoln ? The Nebraska rifle team completed the first half of the 2005-06 season Saturday with a win over Missouri-KansasCity, 4,668-4,493. The victory improves the Huskers’ record to an undefeated 6-0, while the Kangaroos fall to 3-0 in dual competition on the year.
The victory was the 10th consecutive win for Nebraska over UMKC and the first time NU has not lost a match during the fall season since 2001-02.
NU saw its strongest performances in air rifle, where junior Kristina Fehlings gained the disciplines top spot with a score of 589. Fehlings was joined by senior Misty Chanek (583) and freshmen Andrea Franz?n (588) and Eva Richert (587) to combine for a team score of 2,347 in the event. Richert’s score of 587 was a season-high.
“We are getting closer to our goals in air rifle, and I’m satisfied with our performance today,” Head Coach Launi Meili said. “We still need to pick up the pace in smallbore if we want to compete with Alaska next month.”
Despite scoring just 2,321 as a team, the Huskers still captured the top four individual spots in smallbore. Leading NU was Chanek who marked a match-high score of 590 followed by Fehlings with a score of 584, sophomore Kim Chrostowski (579) and sophomore Stacy Underwood (568).
With the first half of their season behind them, the undefeated Huskers now have a month to train for the spring season and competitions against defending national champ Army, West Virginia and perennial foes Alaska-Fairbanks. Meili hopes to use the training time to get her team ready for the challenges yet to come.
“We know where we need to focus,” Meili said. “And after a holiday break we?ll have good momentum taking us into the last few months of the season.”
Nebraska returns to competition on Jan. 14, 2006 against Army in West Point, N.Y.
